Why You Need Your Own Web Site

Why You Need Your Own Web Site
by Wolfdave

You may already have your own internet business, making money by selling stuff on eBay, for example or you could be promoting products via your Blogs. However, to make even more money, you could and perhaps should, consider having your own web-site. Your own web-site will give you greater control over the content and the products you want to sell.

Many people begin their on-line trading business by selling stuff on eBay, Amazon and similar sites. These are all excellent places to start making money, weather you sell part time or full time. You can start for nothing by selling your own unwanted stuff. Then use whatever money you make to buy more items to sell, and repeat until you have sufficient funds to start buying wholesale products. Once you have a good wholesaler or two from which you can buy products that people want, you are well on your way to a full-time internet business.

However, eBay, Amazon and all the others have ‘Rules’ and ‘Policies’ about how and what we sell. These are there to help protect buyers and rightly so. But they can be a minefield for sellers, especially as they are constantly changing these rules and policies. The sudden decision by eBay to ban digital download products is one such change which left hundreds of sellers completely stranded and their internet business in total ruins.

Add to that, all the fees you have to pay. Listing fees, final value fees, shop subscriptions, and once again, these can and do change from time to time. All these charges are coming out of your profits. With the vast amount of competition on eBay, you cannot simply raise your prices to cover these charges or you would end up not selling much. So, perhaps it is time to consider an alternative to eBay. Sooner or later you really should think about having your own web-site.

With you own web-site, you decide what to sell or promote. You decide how long to keep products listed on your site and when to add new products. There are no fees to pay, no matter how many items you have for sale. Most web-site hosting company’s will charge a small monthly fee, which is usually about half of what you would pay for having a basic shop on ebay. Apart from that though, all the rest of the profits are yours. You can stock you web-site with products you are already selling, or affiliate products or digital products, or perhaps all three.

You still need to continue selling on eBay, but now with your own fully stocked web-site, your objective is to persuade your eBay buyers to visit your own web-site, for repeat sales. So you can now lower your prices a little on ebay, just to get people buying from you with the objective of tempting them to visit your web-site and purchase higher priced items. The easiest way to promote your web-site this way is through your Compliments Slip. This can be the packing slip or compliments slip. Print these out properly and neatly, you need to look professional. You should be able to get three slips from one A4 sheet of paper. Keep the message simple and easy to understand. Thank them for their purchase and suggest they visit ‘yourwebsite.com’ for loads more similar items. Consider offering them a discount on their first order from your web-site.

It is absolutely vital that when they arrive at your web-site, they are presented with a proper professional looking site, or they will immediately click away, no matter what you are selling, and you will have lost them forever.

Your customers have come to your web-site to spend money. Therefore your ‘Home’ or ‘Landing Page’ should look as welcoming as possible, with the words ‘Welcome to my website’ somewhere near the top. A nice banner across the top always makes a site look more professional. One or two affiliate or ad-sense adverts will also look good on your Home page, but only one or two. Too many will make the page look gaudy and untidy. A nice, neat and uncluttered Home page is what you should aim for.

If you accept PayPal payments, and you really should, make sure this is clearly stated close to the top. Customers who see PayPal as an accepted payment method will feel much more secure and more likely to buy from you. If you are selling lots of items, include a list of Categories down the left hand side, all with active links directly to the category pages. You can include a short introduction to your products on your Home page and maybe five or six graphics of your Best-Sellers. Also on your Home page, usually at the very top you should have the words ‘Privacy Policy’ which should be Hyper-Linked directly to your privacy policy page. You will not be able to use Google Adsense unless you have a privacy policy. And again, this will also make you customers feel safer.
